the story so far:
Lutwidge Finch, finally arriving at Tattson House, finds Lady Tabitha much altered. Miss Ethyl, the heiress, is smitten by the Earl of Choir, but, after the reading of Sir Roderick's will, the penniless noble has set his sights higher. Meanwhile, Mister MacIntyre, the novelist, continues his surprising dalliance with Doris, the upstairs maid, as Colonel Carter and the mysterious prostitute Nan make their way toward the nearby town of Little Dipping.
Back in Town, the brutal summer climate provides a breeding ground not only for the dreaded Contagion, but for the festering social discontent of its sufferers as well.
