THE MELVINS:
THE KNTTING FACTORY NEW YORK, NEW YORK
For over
fifteen years, the Melvins have put out records that have had tremendous
influence on various listeners, inspiring the grunge movement as well
as many a rebellious teenager. Their records are loud and obnoxious, with
vocals that can be described as an acquired taste. Their songwriting and
musicianship never ceases to amaze me in its complexity and clarity. Throughout
the years, they have been through a slew of bass players, but the two
key ingredients have remained consistent, Buzz, the guitarist and vocalist,
and Dale, the drummer. These two are so connected in their writing that
their interaction is quite beautiful. As powerful a combination as has
ever existed these two have managed to perfect the slow and low metal
drone that is the Melvins. Find their records, and buy them.
Now the show. Their opening song, "eye flys", off an old record
named Gluey Porch Treatments, sent serious chills down my spine. Being
the first time I have ever seen them play, I couldnt have been happier.
They were very tight and loud and the extended feedback introduction really
set the stage for the power of their songs. Some new songs throughout
fell short of some of my expectations, in a frequent complaint of novice
viewers, "I wish they would have played more old stuff." Nonetheless,
this band remains one of the best ever in rock n roll history and
they will always hold my utmost respect.
