Her hand beat the table three times signifying Yes. "Then I will make the sign of the cross," she responded, marking the edge of her writing pad. While she spasmodically wrote, Doyle soothed her, as though cautioning the spirit not to use her forcibly. The couple spoke, Houdini observed, "as if there was someone in reality standing alongside of us."
